Our History

The Aikido Club at Columbia University was started by math professor, Joe Gregg sensei, in 1991.  He was responsible for planting the Kokikai-ryu Aikido seed in New York City.  After he left, Ken Polotan (4th Dan) eventually assumed instruction of the Club.  Ken sensei started with the Club soon after its inception. In fact, he is Columbia University's first black belt in Kokikai Aikido.

In 1999, Gary Snyder sensei (6th Dan) assumed the Head Instructor role at the Aikido Club at Columbia.  He teaches on Tuesday evenings, assisted by Ken Polotan sensei.  Ken Polotan sensei teaches on Thursday evenings.  The Club owes its continued success to past officers, including Kent Chu, Amanda Lloyd, Ricky Hum, Frank Mancini and most recently, Miles Kusonovich.

Kokikai-ryu Aikido International

The Aikido Club at Columbia University is affiliated with Aikido Kokikai-ryu International.  Aikido Kokikai-ryu was founded by Shuji Maruyama sensei about 30 years ago in Philadelphia, PA.  Since then, the school has grown to include numerous university-based and public access dojos, both in the United States and overseas. The main headquarters is located in Nagoya, Japan.  Shuji Maruyama sensei comes to the US to instruct winter, summer and fall camps.
